Process
sketchbook exhibition
I’m excited to share one of my sketchbooks was selected to be a part of Process, a sketchbook exhibition curated by Nick Mass.
I mainly work in a sketchbook and have had an ongoing sketchbook since middle school. I actually remember begging my mom to take me to Borders by the mall to get my first one. They’ve been a place for me to work on new techniques or towards style development goals, see how color and materials interact, work through ideas for larger projects, and take big risks in a low stakes way.
I love seeing other artist’s sketchbooks whether that’s Picasso’s sketchbook on display behind glass or a sketchbook tour on Instagram. It’s a window into their creative practice. In design school, there was a huge emphasis on process. My professors never wanted to see a finished project without seeing the path we took to get there.

I dropped off a couple sketchbooks but I think the one Nick chose for the show is the first one I started painting in. The sketchbook is actually nothing special, it was a free notebook from Just Buffalo Literary Center. The cover fell off after months of use and it’s a weird size. The paper isn’t meant for wet media so it wrinkles a bit. I honestly wish I could find this exact sketchbook in stores.

The opening reception will be at The Crucible Art Collective at 334 Connecticut Street, Buffalo, NY 14213. I will be out of town but the show is up until June 3rd and I can’t wait to swing by and check out all the sketchbooks in the show!
This year’s show is dedicated to Mickey Harmon and Jordan Celotto. Friends of friends and prominent members of Buffalo’s art and LGBTQ+ community.

That's awesome! Congrats, Alex!
